Selfless service

Indian Economy glossary

Also called: sevā, voluntary work, volunteering · Topic: Sectors of the Indian Economy · NCERT: Class 6, Ch 13 "The Value of Work"

Meaning

Selfless service, or sevā, is service given with nothing expected in return: no money, no reward. It is a non-economic activity, so it is not counted in GDP. Its value lies in building trust, care and community spirit. It strengthens society even though no money changes hands.

Example

The langar (community kitchen) at a gurdwara serves free meals to anyone who comes, whatever their religion or caste. The volunteers who cook, serve and wash utensils are not paid. They are doing sevā.

Don't confuse with

  • Paid social work: an NGO worker who draws a salary is doing economic activity, even if the work helps others. Sevā involves no payment at all.
