Right to representation
Also called: Right to be heard · Topic: Consumer Rights and Consumer Protection · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 5 "Consumer Rights"
Meaning
The right to representation is the right of consumers to present their own case before the Consumer Disputes Redressal Commissions. A consumer may argue their case with or without a lawyer. Voluntary consumer groups can guide consumers and represent them before the commissions. Residents' Welfare Associations can take up the cases of their members. This right keeps redressal within reach of ordinary people.
Example
Prakash's money order never reached his daughter, and the post office did not respond. He filed a case at the District Commission in New Delhi and argued it himself, without hiring a lawyer.
Don't confuse with
- Right to seek redressal: this is the right to get a remedy, such as compensation, for the wrong done. Representation is the right to be heard and to present the case while seeking that remedy.
