Arakan Yoma

Geography glossary

Also called: Arakan hills · Topic: India and her Neighbours · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 4 "Climate"

Meaning

The Arakan Yoma is a mountain range along Myanmar's west coast. It acts like a wall against the Bay of Bengal branch of the monsoon. It turns these moist winds towards Bangladesh and North-East India, which helps bring heavy rain there. The range continues under the sea to the south, and its highest parts rise above the water as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Example

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal are the tops of the Arakan Yoma's underwater continuation. They are not separate volcanic islands.

Don't confuse with

  • Patkai, Naga, Manipur and Mizo hills: these hills lie on the India-Myanmar border, and the border runs through them. The Arakan Yoma lies farther south, along Myanmar's coast.
