India-Myanmar border

Geography glossary

Topic: India and her Neighbours · NCERT: Class 7, Ch 2 "India and Her Neighbours"

Meaning

The India-Myanmar border is about 1,643 km long. It runs along Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram, through the forested Patkai, Naga, Manipur and Mizo hills. Part of it follows the Tiau (Tio) river in Mizoram. Hill peoples such as the Nagas and the Kuki-Chin-Mizo peoples live on both sides. Under the Free Movement Regime (FMR), they could go up to 16 km across the border without a visa. In February 2024, after the Manipur violence and Myanmar's civil war, the Centre said it would scrap the FMR and fence the whole border.

Example

Moreh in Manipur is the starting point of the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway. This road of about 1,360 km runs via Mandalay and Bagan to Mae Sot in Thailand, which makes Myanmar India's land gateway to Southeast Asia.

Don't confuse with

  • India-Bangladesh border: Mizoram touches both Myanmar and Bangladesh, but Assam does not border Myanmar. "Assam borders Myanmar" is a common exam trap.
