Meaning

Atal Setu, also called the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, is a sea bridge about 21.8 km long across Mumbai harbour. It opened in January 2024 and is India's longest sea bridge. A sea bridge carries a road over open seawater instead of over a river. Atal Setu cuts travel time between Mumbai city and the mainland side of the harbour.

Example

The bridge runs from Sewri in Mumbai to Nhava Sheva near Navi Mumbai in Maharashtra. Nhava Sheva is near JNPT, one of India's main container ports.

Don't confuse with

  • New Pamban Bridge (April 2025): a rail sea bridge to Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu. It is India's first vertical-lift sea bridge, meaning part of the deck rises to let ships pass. Atal Setu is a road bridge and holds the record for length.
