Meaning

The National Highways Development Project (NHDP) was a highway programme run by NHAI from 1998-99. It was built in phases. Phase I was the Golden Quadrilateral. Later work included the North-South and East-West corridors. The project cut travel time, distance and cost between India's big cities. In 2017 it was merged into Bharatmala Pariyojana.

Example

The North-South corridor (Srinagar to Kanniyakumari, with the Kochi-Salem spur, 4,076 km) and the East-West corridor (Silchar in Assam to Porbandar in Gujarat, 3,640 km) cross at Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh.

Don't confuse with

  • Bharatmala Pariyojana (2017): the bigger programme that took over NHDP. It adds about 26,000 km of economic corridors, plus feeder routes, border and port links, and new expressways.
