Beas river
Topic: Drainage System of India: Rivers, Basins and Patterns · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 3 "Drainage System"
Meaning
The Beas is a tributary of the Indus and one of the five rivers of Punjab. It rises at Beas Kund, at about 4,000 m near the Rohtang Pass. It flows through the Kullu valley and cuts gorges at Kati and Largi in the Dhauladhar range. It then enters the Punjab plains and meets the Satluj at Harike. It is the only one of the five rivers that lies wholly in India.
Example
At Harike in Punjab, the Beas and Satluj join. The Indira Gandhi Canal starts here and carries water into the Thar desert. Under the Indus Waters Treaty (1960), the Beas is one of the eastern rivers given to India.
Don't confuse with
- Ravi river: it also rises near the Rohtang Pass, but it flows through the Chamba valley and crosses into Pakistan to join the Chenab.
