Ravi river
Topic: Drainage System of India: Rivers, Basins and Patterns · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 3 "Drainage System"
Meaning
The Ravi is a tributary of the Indus and one of the five rivers of Punjab. It rises west of the Rohtang Pass in the Kullu hills of Himachal Pradesh. It flows through the Chamba valley, between the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar ranges. It then enters Pakistan and joins the Chenab near Sarai Sidhu. Under the Indus Waters Treaty (1960), it is one of the eastern rivers given to India.
Example
The town of Chamba in Himachal Pradesh lies in the Ravi valley. Ravi water is part of the Ravi–Beas water that the Satluj–Yamuna Link canal was meant to carry to Haryana.
Don't confuse with
- Beas river: it also rises near the Rohtang Pass, but it flows through the Kullu valley, stays wholly in India and joins the Satluj at Harike.
