Bomdi La
Topic: Structure and Physiography of India: Himalayas, Plains, Peninsula, Coasts and Islands · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 1 "India - Location"
Meaning
Bomdi La is a mountain pass at about 2,600 m in western Arunachal Pradesh, near the town of Bomdila. It carries the road from the Assam plains north to Tawang. Because it is one of the few routes through this part of the eastern Himalaya, it matters a great deal for defence. It was a key route in the 1962 war with China, and it still carries army supplies today.
Example
A traveller driving from Tezpur in Assam to Tawang crosses Bomdi La first and then the higher Sela Pass. The Sela Tunnel, opened in March 2024, now gives all-weather access along this road.
Don't confuse with
- Sela Pass: this is on the same road to Tawang, but it is much higher (about 4,170 m) and lies further north, closer to Tawang.
