Meaning

Zoji La is a high mountain pass, about 3,500 m high, at the western end of the Great Himalaya / Zaskar range. It links the Kashmir valley (Sonamarg) with Drass–Kargil in Ladakh on the Srinagar–Leh highway. It is the main road gateway into Ladakh from the Kashmir side. Heavy snow closes it for several months each winter, so the Zojila Tunnel is being built to keep the route open all year.

Explanation

What a pass is, and why Zoji La matters so much

  • A pass (also called a col, or La in Tibetan and Ladakhi) is a low gap or saddle in a mountain range. People and animals can cross the range there.
  • "La" already means pass, so "Zoji La" means "Zoji Pass". Never write "Zoji La Pass".

  • The Himalaya acts like a wall.

  • It was formed in the Tertiary Himalayan orogeny (orogeny means mountain building when two plates collide). Here the Indian plate pushed into the Eurasian plate.
  • The result is a range about 2,400 km long, with several parallel ranges and very high crests.
  • Only a few gaps cut through it, so trade, pilgrims and armies have to use these few passes.

  • In the Himalaya, most passes were cut by glaciers, or by rivers that kept flowing while the mountains rose.

Location and the route it carries

  • Range: the western end of the Great Himalaya / Zaskar range.
  • Connects: Kashmir valley (Sonamarg) → Drass–Kargil → Ladakh.
  • Road: the Srinagar–Leh highway.
  • It is the gateway from the Kashmir valley into Ladakh.

Winter closure: the problem

  • Heavy snow falls on the high crest in winter.
  • The pass is blocked for several months.
  • Ladakh is cut off by road from the Kashmir side.
  • Army posts and villages in Ladakh lose their road link until the snow is cleared.

Zojila Tunnel: the response

  • It is being built by NHIDCL for the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways [2].
  • Length: main tunnel 13.153 km, plus 17.030 km of approach roads, for a total of 30.18 km [2].
  • Cost: total project cost ₹6,809.69 crore [2].
  • Progress: physical progress was 52.13% as of August 2024. The scheduled completion date given in 2024 was 29 September 2026 [2].
  • A historic breakthrough at the tunnel was announced in 2026 [3].
  • When finished, it is expected to be Asia's longest bi-directional road tunnel (bi-directional means traffic moves both ways inside the same tunnel).
  • Idea behind it: snow closes the pass, so the tunnel goes under the snowbound crest and keeps the road open all year.

Where it occurs

  • Union Territory: Ladakh. It lies on the road from the Kashmir valley (J&K) to Ladakh.
  • Sonamarg (Kashmir valley side) is at one end. Drass and Kargil (Ladakh side) are at the other.
  • Other Ladakh/J&K passes:
  • Khardung La: in the Ladakh range, north of Leh. It leads to the Nubra and Shyok valleys and on towards Siachen.
  • Banihal: in the Pir Panjal range. It links Jammu with Srinagar.

  • Similar snowbound passes with tunnels:

  • Rohtang (Himachal): bypassed by the Atal Tunnel (9.02 km, opened 3 October 2020) [1].
  • Sela (Arunachal): bypassed by the Sela Tunnel (dedicated 9 March 2024) [4].

Don't confuse with

  • Khardung La: it is in the Ladakh range (Trans-Himalaya, the ranges north of the Great Himalaya). It leads north from Leh to Nubra and Siachen. Zoji La is in the Great Himalaya / Zaskar range and leads from Kashmir into Ladakh.
  • Banihal: it crosses the Pir Panjal (Lesser Himalaya) and links Jammu with Srinagar. Zoji La links Srinagar (Kashmir valley) with Ladakh.
  • Atal Tunnel: it is under Rohtang Pass in the Pir Panjal, Himachal. It is 9.02 km long and links Manali to Lahaul-Spiti [1]. The Zojila Tunnel (main tunnel 13.153 km) is on the Srinagar–Leh route [2].
  • Zoji La vs "Zojila Tunnel": Zoji La is the natural pass over the crest. The Zojila Tunnel is the man-made road tunnel being built beneath it.

Prelims Hooks

  • Zoji La (~3,500 m): Great Himalaya / Zaskar range. It connects Sonamarg (Kashmir valley) with Drass–Kargil (Ladakh) on the Srinagar–Leh highway.
  • Passes from west to east: Zoji La → Khardung La → Rohtang → Shipki La → Lipulekh → Nathu La → Bomdi La → Sela → Pangsau.
  • Zojila Tunnel: main tunnel 13.153 km, total 30.18 km with approach roads, built by NHIDCL for MoRTH [2]. It is expected to be Asia's longest bi-directional road tunnel.
  • Pass–range pairs: Zoji La (Great Himalaya/Zaskar); Khardung La (Ladakh range); Banihal and Rohtang (Pir Panjal).
  • Trap: Zoji La is not in the Pir Panjal, and it does not link Jammu with Srinagar. That is Banihal.
  • Trap: "La" means pass, so "Zoji La Pass" is wrong.

Mains Points

  • Winter isolation and the tunnel response (GS-III):
  • Snow closes Zoji La for months, which cuts Ladakh off by road.
  • Tunnels under snowbound crests (Atal 2020, Sela 2024, and Zojila, which is 13.153 km long and costs ₹6,809.69 crore) give all-weather access for troops and civilians [1][2][4].
  • This is part of the wider push for border infrastructure since 2017–2020.

  • Strategic chokepoint (GS-I/GS-III):

  • The Himalaya is a high, continuous wall, so traffic into Ladakh is funnelled through Zoji La.
  • The pass carries army supplies to forward posts in Ladakh (Siachen, eastern Ladakh). It also supplies civilians, tourism, markets and health care.

  • Fragile terrain (GS-III, disasters):

  • The Himalayan rock here is young and prone to earthquakes and landslides.
  • Building roads and tunnels in it needs careful planning for slope stability, glacier lakes and the ecology of high-altitude valleys.
