Buddhist circuit

Geography glossary

Topic: India's International Trade and Tourism · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

The Buddhist circuit is a tourist route that links places from the Buddha's life. The four main places are Lumbini (birth), Bodh Gaya (enlightenment), Sarnath (first sermon) and Kushinagar (death). Rajgir, Vaishali, Sravasti and Sankisa are also on the route. It draws pilgrims and tourists, especially from Buddhist countries in Asia, and so earns foreign exchange.

Example

Kushinagar in eastern Uttar Pradesh got an international airport in 2021, so foreign pilgrims can fly in directly. Lumbini, just across the border in Nepal, makes the circuit international.
