Tourism as trade

Geography glossary

Topic: India's International Trade and Tourism · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 7 "Lifelines of National Economy"

Meaning

Tourism counts as a kind of trade because foreign visitors spend money in India. That spending brings in foreign exchange, which means money in other countries' currencies. It works like an export, even though no goods leave the country. Tourism also brings Indians from different regions together, which promotes national integration. It gives work to local craftspeople and keeps cultures alive. It also helps the world understand India's heritage. Foreign tourists come for heritage, eco, adventure, cultural, medical and business tourism. Too many visitors can harm a place, so tourism must stay within its carrying capacity: the number of visitors a place can take without damage.

Example

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) is a major centre of medical tourism, along with Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Kerala (for Ayurveda). Patients from abroad come for treatment, often on an e-medical visa. The money they spend on hospitals, hotels and travel is earned as foreign exchange.

Don't confuse with

  • Domestic tourism: Indians travelling within India. It creates local jobs, but the money stays inside the country, so it earns no foreign exchange.
