Bundelkhand region
Topic: Regional Planning and Sustainable Development in India · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Bundelkhand is a backward region in central India. It is made up of 13 districts split between Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. It is a rocky plateau with thin soils, and its rainfall is unreliable. Drought hits it often. This leads to farm distress and to people leaving to find work elsewhere (migration). It matters as a classic case of a drought-prone backward region that needs special planning.
Example
Bundelkhand lies between the Yamuna plains and the Vindhyan hills. It got a special package in 2009. The Ken-Betwa river link is meant to bring it more water for irrigation and drinking.
Don't confuse with
- KBK region: also a drought-hit backward region, but it lies in western and southern Odisha (Kalahandi, Bolangir, Koraput), not in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
