KBK region
Also called: Kalahandi-Bolangir-Koraput · Topic: Regional Planning and Sustainable Development in India · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
KBK stands for the undivided Kalahandi, Bolangir and Koraput districts of western and southern Odisha. The region suffers from frequent drought, hunger deaths and distress migration (people leaving because they cannot survive at home). It shows that a region can stay backward even when it has resources, because development also needs technology and investment. It has had a special area development plan since the late 1990s.
Example
Kalahandi district in western Odisha became well known for drought and hunger deaths. That made the KBK region a focus of special planning for backward areas.
Don't confuse with
- Bundelkhand region: also drought-prone and backward, but it is a plateau region of 13 districts in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
