Cadastral map
Topic: Maps and Map Scale · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 1 "Introduction to Maps"
Meaning
A cadastral map is a very large-scale map that shows who owns each piece of land. It marks the boundary of every farm plot and urban house and gives each parcel a number. The word comes from the French cadastre, meaning "register of territorial property". Government makes these maps to collect revenue and taxes and to keep records of ownership. Village maps are drawn at 1:4,000, and city plans at 1:2,000 or larger.
Example
A village map from a district land-records office in Uttar Pradesh, drawn at 1:4,000, shows each field with its own number and boundary. The revenue official uses it to record who owns which field and to settle boundary disputes.
Don't confuse with
- Topographical map: also large-scale, but it shows the land's features, such as hills, rivers, roads and settlements. It does not show who owns each plot.
