Wall map

Geography glossary

Topic: Maps and Map Scale · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 1 "Introduction to Maps"

Meaning

A wall map is a small-scale map printed on large paper or a plastic base. It is made to hang in classrooms and lecture halls, so everyone in the room can see it. Its scale is smaller than a topographical map's but larger than an atlas map's. So it covers a big area, like a whole country, but shows more detail than a page in an atlas.

Example

A large map of India hanging in a classroom shows the states, major rivers such as the Ganga and the Godavari, and big cities. A teacher can point to the Western Ghats or the Thar Desert, and the whole class can see them.

Don't confuse with

  • Atlas map: an even smaller-scale map printed in a book. It shows less detail than a wall map.
