Chennai Port

Meaning
Chennai Port is one of the oldest ports on India's east coast. It has an artificial harbour (a sheltered area made by building walls into the sea), built in 1859. The coast here has no natural shelter, so the harbour had to be built. The water near the coast is shallow, so very large ships cannot use it easily. Its hinterland (the land area a port serves) is Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
Example
Chennai Port, on the Coromandel Coast of Tamil Nadu, handles trade for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Kamarajar Port was built 25 km to its north to ease the load on it.
Don't confuse with
- Visakhapatnam Port: a deep, land-locked and well-protected harbour in Andhra Pradesh. Chennai's harbour is artificial and shallow.
- Kamarajar Port (Ennore): a newer port 25 km north of Chennai, built to relieve Chennai Port.
