Haldia Port

Geography glossary

Topic: India's International Trade and Tourism · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 8 "International Trade"

Meaning

Haldia Port lies on the Hugli river, 105 km downstream from Kolkata. It was built to ease congestion (overcrowding of ships and cargo) at Kolkata port. Kolkata sits far inland on a silty river, so big ships find it hard to reach. Haldia is closer to the sea and handles bulk cargo, meaning goods shipped loose in large amounts.

Example

Haldia, in West Bengal, handles iron ore, coal, petroleum, fertilisers, jute and cotton.

Don't confuse with

  • Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (Kolkata): the older riverine port 128 km inland on the Hugli. Haldia is 105 km downstream from it and was built to relieve it.
  • Diamond Harbour: also on the Hugli, but it was developed after Partition to replace Chittagong.
