City gas distribution
Also called: CGD · Topic: Energy Resources of India: Conventional and Non-conventional · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 5 "Mineral and Energy Resources"
Meaning
City gas distribution (CGD) is a network of pipes that supplies natural gas inside a city. It gives gas in two forms. CNG (compressed natural gas) is gas squeezed into tanks to run buses, autos and cars. PNG (piped natural gas) flows through pipes straight into kitchens, shops and factories. Gas burns cleaner than petrol, diesel or coal, so CGD helps cut city air pollution. It also means fewer people need LPG cylinders.
Example
Delhi's buses and autos run on CNG from the city gas network. Many homes there cook with PNG supplied through pipes.
Don't confuse with
- LPG: liquefied petroleum gas sold in cylinders. It is mostly propane and butane. CGD supplies natural gas (mostly methane) through pipes.
