Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga
Also called: Jagdishpur-Haldia-Bokaro-Dhamra pipeline · Topic: Energy Resources of India: Conventional and Non-conventional · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga is a natural gas pipeline of about 3,300 km built by GAIL. It runs from Jagdishpur in Uttar Pradesh to Haldia, Bokaro and Dhamra. Eastern India had long been cut off from the gas pipelines of the west and north. This line brings gas to its industries, fertiliser plants and city gas networks. It forms part of the National Gas Grid, which aims to link every gas source and market.
Example
The pipeline links Jagdishpur (UP) with Haldia (West Bengal), Bokaro (Jharkhand) and the port of Dhamra (Odisha). Gas can now reach eastern cities such as Patna and Ranchi.
Don't confuse with
- Hazira–Vijaipur–Jagdishpur (HVJ) pipeline: GAIL's first trunk gas line, about 1,700 km long. It carried Mumbai High gas to the west and north. Urja Ganga carries gas onward to the east.
