Meaning

Coffee is a tropical plantation crop. It grows best on highlands and hill slopes where it is warm and there is no frost. The leading producers, in order, are:

  1. Brazil
  2. Vietnam, mainly robusta
  3. Colombia
  4. Indonesia
  5. Ethiopia, the original home of arabica

(verify current)

Brazil's large coffee estates are called fazendas.

Example

In India, coffee grows on the slopes of the Western Ghats. The best-known area is Chikkamagaluru district in Karnataka, where the Baba Budan Hills are famous as the place coffee was first grown in India.

Don't confuse with

  • Arabica and robusta: these are two kinds of coffee, not two regions. Ethiopia is the home of arabica, and Vietnam grows mainly robusta.
  • Cocoa belt: cocoa grows on hot, humid equatorial lowlands, led by West Africa. Coffee prefers frost-free tropical highlands.
