Fazenda
Topic: Primary Activities: Gathering, Pastoralism, Agriculture and Mining · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 4 "Primary Activities"
Meaning
A fazenda is a large coffee plantation in Brazil. Some fazendas are still run by Europeans. NCERT lists fazendas among the plantations that European colonists set up in the tropics. Others on that list are British tea estates in India and Sri Lanka and French cocoa and coffee plantations in West Africa. Like other plantations, a fazenda is a large estate that grows a single crop for profit, with heavy capital, scientific methods, cheap labour and good transport to ports.
Example
The coffee fazendas on the uplands of São Paulo state in south-east Brazil are the best-known examples. They help make Brazil the world's largest coffee producer.
