Comprehensive Environmental Pollution Index

Geography glossary

Also called: CEPI · Topic: Manufacturing Industries of India: Location and Distribution · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

The Comprehensive Environmental Pollution Index (CEPI) is a score for how polluted an industrial area is. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) made it in 2009. It checks industrial clusters (areas with many factories close together) for air, water and land pollution and gives each one a number. A higher score means worse pollution. Clusters with very high scores are called critically polluted. Those places then need stricter action to control pollution.

Example

Ankleshwar and Vapi in south Gujarat, both full of chemical factories, topped the CEPI list. Ghaziabad (Uttar Pradesh) and Singrauli, a coal and power belt on the Madhya Pradesh-Uttar Pradesh border, were also rated critically polluted.

Don't confuse with

  • Air Quality Index (AQI): it measures only air quality in a city, from day to day. CEPI is a combined score for air, water and land pollution in an industrial cluster.
