Meaning
NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation) is India's largest power generating company. It was set up in 1975. Most of its power comes from burning coal, which can cause a lot of pollution. NCERT gives NTPC as a good example of a power company that works to protect the environment. It has ISO 14001 certification, an international standard for managing environmental impact. Its main steps are:
- using fly ash instead of dumping it
- planting green belts (strips of trees) around plants
- managing ash ponds
- recycling ash water
Example
The NTPC thermal power plant at Ramagundam in Telangana practises ash use, ash pond management and ash water recycling. This keeps waste out of nearby land and rivers.
