Meaning

COP30 was the 30th Conference of the Parties, the yearly meeting of countries under the UN climate convention (UNFCCC). It was held in November 2025 in Belém, a city near the mouth of the Amazon in northern Brazil. Its main decision, called the "Global Mutirão", asked countries to at least triple adaptation finance by 2035. A just-transition mechanism was also agreed. It aims to make the shift away from polluting industries fair for workers and communities. However, no roadmap for moving away from fossil fuels made it into the formal text (verify current).

Example

COP30 launched the Tropical Forests Forever Facility. This fund aims to reward countries that keep their tropical forests standing, such as those in the Amazon basin.

Don't confuse with

  • COP28 Dubai (2023): COP28 completed the first Global Stocktake and called for "transitioning away from fossil fuels". COP30 did not adopt a fossil-fuel roadmap.
