Global Stocktake
Also called: GST · Topic: Climate Change: Causes, Evidence and the Global Response · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Global Stocktake (GST) is a review held every five years under Article 14 of the Paris Agreement. It checks how far all countries together have moved towards the Agreement's goals. Its results guide the next round of national climate pledges (NDCs). This keeps pushing countries to make their pledges stronger over time. The next stocktake is due in 2028.
Example
The first Global Stocktake ended at COP28 in Dubai, UAE, in 2023. It called for "transitioning away from fossil fuels in energy systems". It also called for tripling renewable energy and doubling the rate of energy-efficiency gains by 2030.
Don't confuse with
- Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs): an NDC is one country's own climate pledge. The Global Stocktake looks at the progress of all countries together.
