Meaning

The Coromandel Coast is the southern part of the eastern coastal plain, along Tamil Nadu. It is low and sandy and includes the Kaveri delta. During the southwest monsoon it lies in the rain shadow, the dry side sheltered from rain-bearing winds, so it stays mostly dry. It gets most of its rain from the northeast monsoon and cyclones in October-December. The 2004 tsunami struck this coast.

Example

The Kaveri delta near Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu is the fertile heart of the Coromandel Coast. Chennai is its main port and city.

Don't confuse with

  • Malabar Coast: this is on the west side, in Kerala and coastal Karnataka. It gets very heavy rain from the southwest monsoon, while Coromandel stays dry in that season.
  • Northern Circars: this is the part of the eastern coastal plain in Andhra Pradesh, north of Coromandel.
