Konkan coast
Topic: Structure and Physiography of India: Himalayas, Plains, Peninsula, Coasts and Islands · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 2 "Structure and Physiography"
Meaning
The Konkan coast is the part of the western coastal plain in Maharashtra, running from Daman to Goa. It is narrow and rocky, with many creeks, which are narrow inlets of the sea. Like the rest of the west coast, it is a submerged coast, so its rivers form estuaries rather than deltas. The southwest monsoon gives it very heavy rain. The Konkan Railway, opened in 1998, runs along it.
Example
Mumbai lies on the Konkan coast. Its sheltered waters hold Mazagaon port and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port at Nhava Sheva.
Don't confuse with
- Malabar Coast: this is further south, in Kerala and coastal Karnataka. It is known for kayals (backwaters), while the Konkan coast is known for rocky shores and creeks.
