Deendayal Port
Also called: Kandla Port · Topic: India's International Trade and Tourism · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 7 "Lifelines of National Economy"; Class 12, Ch 2 "Human Settlements"; Class 12, Ch 8 "International Trade"
Meaning
Deendayal Port (old name: Kandla Port) is a tidal port at the head (inner end) of the Gulf of Kachchh in Gujarat. It was the first port developed after Independence, built to replace Karachi and to take pressure off Mumbai. It is one of India's 12 Major Ports [5], and it handles mainly petroleum, petroleum products and fertiliser. In FY 2025-26 it was India's top Major Port by cargo [2]. This makes it the main sea gateway for north-western India.
Explanation
Why it was built (cause → process → result)
- Cause: Partition (1947)
- Karachi, the main port of north-west British India, went to Pakistan.
- The north-western hinterland (the inland area a port serves) was left with no port of its own.
-
Mumbai had to carry too much traffic.
-
Process: a new port in Gujarat
- Kandla was built at the head of the Gulf of Kachchh.
-
It became the first port developed after Independence.
-
Result: a new gateway for the north-west
- It replaced Karachi for the north-western states.
- It took part of Mumbai's load.
What kind of port it is
- Tidal port: large ships depend on the high tide (the daily rise in sea level) to get enough water depth to come in and go out.
- Major port: it is run by the Union Government through a Port Authority (the Deendayal Port Authority) under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways [6]. State governments run the non-major ports.
- Cargo: it was designed to handle very large volumes of petroleum, petroleum products and fertiliser.
Vadinar: the offshore oil terminal
- Vadinar is an offshore oil terminal in the Gulf of Kachchh. It is linked to Deendayal Port.
- Why it is needed:
- The water near the port is shallow, so the largest tankers cannot come in easily.
-
At Vadinar, large tankers stay out at sea and unload crude oil through pipelines.
-
This lets the port handle huge oil imports even though it is a tidal port.
Its position today
- FY 2024-25: Deendayal and Paradip became the first Major Ports ever to handle more than 150 million tonnes of cargo [3].
- FY 2025-26: Deendayal was the top Major Port by cargo, with 160.11 MT. Paradip (156.45 MT) was second and JNPA (102.01 MT) was third [2].
- FY 2025-26: it was also the fastest Major Port to reach 100 million tonnes [6].
- Why it leads:
- POL (petroleum, oil and lubricants) was the largest cargo group at Major Ports in FY 2024-25, with 254.5 MT (29.8%) [3].
- Deendayal and Vadinar handle a large share of this oil, mainly crude oil imports for the refineries of Gujarat and north-west India [2][3].
Where it occurs
- Location: at the head of the Gulf of Kachchh, on the Arabian Sea, in Gujarat (about 23°N). It is the northernmost Major Port on India's west coast.
- Offshore terminal: Vadinar, in the Gulf of Kachchh.
- Hinterland: the grain-growing and industrial belt of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat.
- West coast Major Ports, north to south: Deendayal → Mumbai / JNPA → Mormugao (Goa) → New Mangalore (Karnataka) → Cochin (Kerala).
- Port it replaced: Karachi, now in Pakistan.
Don't confuse with
- Mumbai Port: a natural harbour that is sheltered by Mumbai Island and the mainland, and it has India's largest oil terminal (NCERT). Deendayal is a tidal port. In FY 2025-26 it was the top port by total cargo [2].
- Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva): India's largest container port (7.3 million TEUs in FY 2024-25) [3]. Deendayal is the largest by total cargo tonnage [2]. Its main cargo is oil and fertiliser, not containers.
- Vadinar vs Vadhavan: Vadinar is Deendayal's offshore oil terminal in the Gulf of Kachchh, Gujarat. Vadhavan is a new greenfield (built on new land), deep-draft port in Palghar, Maharashtra, approved in 2024 [4].
- Paradip: an east coast port in Odisha. It came second by cargo in FY 2025-26 (156.45 MT) [2]. Deendayal is the west coast leader.
Prelims Hooks
- First port developed after Independence: Deendayal (Kandla). It was built to replace Karachi and to take pressure off Mumbai.
- Feature–location match: tidal port at the head of the Gulf of Kachchh, Gujarat. Its offshore oil terminal is at Vadinar.
- Top Major Port by cargo in FY 2025-26: Deendayal (160.11 MT) > Paradip (156.45 MT) > JNPA (102.01 MT) [2].
- First Major Ports to cross 150 MT (FY 2024-25): Deendayal and Paradip [3].
- Fastest Major Port to reach 100 MT in FY 2025-26: Deendayal [6].
- Trap: the largest port by cargo is Deendayal. The largest container port is JNPA. Also, Vadinar (Gujarat, oil terminal) is not the same as Vadhavan (Maharashtra, new port).
Mains Points
- Partition shaped India's port map (GS-I)
- Losing Karachi in 1947 cut the north-western hinterland off from the sea.
- Kandla was built to fill this gap.
-
Today Deendayal is India's top cargo port, mainly because of crude oil imports for the refineries of Gujarat and north-west India [2][3].
-
Energy security and port design (GS-III)
- POL is the largest cargo group at Major Ports (29.8% in FY 2024-25) [3].
- A tidal port with shallow water uses an offshore terminal (Vadinar) and pipelines so it can still take the largest oil tankers.
-
This shows how engineering can make up for a port's natural limits.
-
Hinterland links decide a port's success (GS-III: infrastructure and logistics)
- Deendayal serves a large landlocked belt, from Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab to Rajasthan and Gujarat.
- Good rail, road and pipeline links to this belt matter as much as the port itself.
- Weak inland links, not the coast itself, often limit a port.
