Meaning

Mormugao Port is a major port in Goa with a natural harbour. It lies at the mouth of the Zuari estuary (the wide mouth where a river meets the sea). It was remodelled in 1961 to export iron ore to Japan, and it became India's premier iron-ore port. Class 10 says it handled about half of India's ore exports, which is an old figure. The Konkan Railway widened its hinterland (the land area a port serves).

Example

Iron ore mined in Goa and Karnataka moves to Mormugao and is shipped to Japan. Its hinterland covers Goa, Karnataka and southern Maharashtra.

Don't confuse with

  • New Mangalore Port: also an iron-ore port on the west coast, but in Karnataka. It exports ore from Kudremukh, not Goa.
