Meaning
Doordarshan (DD) is India's public television broadcaster. TV in India began in Delhi in 1959 and spread to other cities after 1972. At first it was part of All India Radio. In 1976 it became a separate body called Doordarshan. After the INSAT-1A satellite was launched, national programmes (DD1) could reach remote and backward rural areas. Doordarshan has one of the world's largest terrestrial networks, which means its signal is sent out from towers on the ground. Since 1997, Prasar Bharati has run it along with All India Radio.
