GAIL (India) Limited
Also called: GAIL, Gas Authority of India Limited · Topic: Transport and Communication in India · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 7 "Transport and Communication"
Meaning
GAIL (India) Limited is a public sector company set up in 1984. Its job is to transport, process and market natural gas. Gas is best moved through pipelines, so GAIL builds and runs long gas pipelines. These pipelines carry gas from fields and ports to fertiliser plants, power stations, industries and city gas networks. This lets factories be built far from the gas fields.
Example
GAIL built the Hazira-Vijaipur-Jagdishpur (HVJ) pipeline, about 1,700 km long. It carries gas from Mumbai High and Bassein through Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. It does not pass through Maharashtra.
Don't confuse with
- Oil India Limited (OIL): it built the Naharkatiya-Barauni crude oil pipeline in Assam and Bihar. OIL is linked to crude oil. GAIL is linked to natural gas.
