Meaning

The Naharkatiya-Barauni pipeline was Asia's first cross-country crude oil pipeline. A cross-country pipeline is a long pipeline that crosses many regions. It is 1,157 km long and was built by Oil India Limited. It carries crude oil from the Naharkatiya oilfield in Assam to the refinery at Barauni in Bihar. It was extended to Kanpur in 1966. It showed that pipelines could feed refineries far from the oilfields.

Example

Crude oil from upper Assam travels along this line via Guwahati to Barauni, and then on towards Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh. This route forms the core of the Upper Assam-Kanpur pipeline network.

Don't confuse with

  • Hazira-Vijaipur-Jagdishpur pipeline: a gas pipeline built by GAIL in western and northern India (Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh). Naharkatiya-Barauni carries crude oil in the north-east and east.
