Home-stay

Geography glossary

Also called: Heritage homes · Topic: Tertiary, Quaternary and Quinary Activities · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 6 "Tertiary and Quaternary Activities"

Meaning

A home-stay is when tourists stay in the house of a local family instead of in a hotel. Guests eat home-cooked food and see local customs and daily life up close. For the families, it has become a profitable business. Old family houses are often turned into heritage homes for guests. The money stays in the local community, so tourism helps ordinary households and not only big hotels.

Example

In Madikeri, in Coorg (Kodagu) district of Karnataka, many families host tourists in their homes, often on coffee estates. Old Portuguese-style houses in Goa are also run as heritage home-stays.

Don't confuse with

  • Hotel or resort: a hotel is a business building run only for guests. In a home-stay, guests live with a family in its own home.
