Honolulu
Topic: World Transport and Communication · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 7 "Transport and Communication"; Class 12, Ch 8 "International Trade"
Meaning
Honolulu is a port in Hawaii, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Several North Pacific sea routes meet there, and it also lies on the South Pacific route. It is a classic port of call, which means a port where ships stop on a long voyage to take on fuel, water and supplies. Islands in the middle of an ocean become important ports this way, because there are few other places to stop.
Example
Honolulu lies on the island of Oahu in the Hawaiian Islands. Ships on routes from Panama to Sydney, or from the west coast of North America to Asian ports, call there to refuel.
Don't confuse with
- Transshipment hub: at a transshipment hub, cargo is moved from one ship to another. A port of call like Honolulu is mainly a stop for fuel and supplies.
