Southern Atlantic sea route
Topic: World Transport and Communication · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 7 "Transport and Communication"
Meaning
The Southern Atlantic sea route links Western Europe and West Africa with Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay in South America. It carries much less traffic than the Northern Atlantic route. The countries it serves have fewer people and are less developed. Trade across the ocean is also small because both sides make similar goods, so they have little to sell each other.
Example
The route between Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and Cape Town (South Africa) is little used. Both regions mainly produce farm goods and minerals.
Don't confuse with
- Cape of Good Hope sea route: this route runs around the southern tip of Africa, linking Western Europe with Africa, Asia and Australia. Its trade is growing.
