Hutti gold mine
Topic: Mineral Resources of India: Distribution and Conservation · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Hutti gold mine is India's main primary gold mine. A primary mine takes gold out of the hard rock where it first formed, usually in veins. India produces very little gold of its own, so Hutti matters a great deal for domestic output.
Example
Hutti is in Raichur district, Karnataka. The Kolar Gold Fields, also in Karnataka, were mined from 1880 and closed in 2001. That left Hutti as the country's main working gold mine.
Don't confuse with
- Kolar Gold Fields: this was India's famous old gold mine, which closed in 2001. Hutti is the one still producing.
- Placer gold: this is gold that rivers or waves have collected in sand. It is not dug from rock veins, as Hutti's gold is.
