Impact of ITDP in Bharmaur
Topic: Regional Planning and Sustainable Development in India · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 6 "Planning and Sustainable Development in Indian Context"
Meaning
The Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP) changed the Gaddi tribal region of Bharmaur, in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh. It built schools, health centres, drinking water supply, roads, communications and electricity. Female literacy rose from 1.88% in 1971 to 65% in 2011. The gap between male and female literacy narrowed, the sex ratio improved and child marriage fell. Farmers began growing more pulses and cash crops, but still with traditional tools. The gains were uneven, though.
Example
Most of the benefit went to villages along the Ravi river in the Holi and Khani areas. The remote Tundah and Kugti areas, deep in the gorges, still lag behind.
Don't confuse with
- Tribal sub-plan: this is the funding strategy (Fifth Plan, 1974) that set aside money for tribal areas. The ITDP is the project unit through which Bharmaur used that money.
