Meaning

PM JANMAN (Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan) is a mission launched in November 2023 with about ₹24,000 crore. It is meant for the 75 Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs). These are the most deprived and isolated tribal communities. The mission brings housing, roads, piped water, electricity, health care, schooling and livelihoods to their habitations, meaning their small settlements. It matters because tribal development often reaches easy-to-reach villages first and misses the most remote ones.

Example

PVTG habitations in remote hills and forests of central and eastern India are its targets. The Bharmaur case in Himachal Pradesh shows why this matters: remote Tundah and Kugti lagged while villages along the Ravi gained.

Don't confuse with

  • Tribal sub-plan: it sets aside plan funds for all tribal areas in line with their population. PM JANMAN aims only at PVTG habitations.
