International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction
Also called: IDNDR · Topic: Natural Hazards and Disaster Management in India · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 6 "Natural Hazards and Disasters: Causes, Consequences and Management"
Meaning
The International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR) was the UN's decade of the 1990s. Its aim was to cut deaths and damage from natural disasters. The UN General Assembly declared it in 1989, by resolution 44/236. The UN decade ran from 1990 to 1999, while NCERT gives the dates as 1990-2000. It pushed countries to plan ahead before disasters struck instead of only giving relief afterwards, especially in developing countries.
Example
The World Conference on Natural Disaster Reduction was held at Yokohama, Japan, on 23-27 May 1994, in the middle of the decade. It adopted the Yokohama Strategy, a "Plan of Action for a Safer World".
