Topic: Mineral Resources of India: Distribution and Conservation · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Jaduguda was India's first uranium mine. The Uranium Corporation of India opened it in 1967. Uranium is the fuel for nuclear power. In India it occurs mainly in the old Dharwar rocks, along the Singhbhum copper belt.
Example
Jaduguda is in East Singhbhum district, Jharkhand. Another key site is Tummalapalle in Kadapa district, Andhra Pradesh, which holds one of the world's larger low-grade uranium deposits.
Don't confuse with
- Monazite: this is a beach-sand mineral found in Kerala, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. It gives thorium, not uranium.
