Just energy transition
Also called: JETP · Topic: Energy Resources of India: Conventional and Non-conventional · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
A just energy transition means moving away from coal and other fossil fuels in a fair way. It protects the workers, families and districts whose living depends on coal. It covers three things: retraining coal workers for new jobs, bringing new industries to coal areas and reusing old mine land. It matters for India because coal still makes about three-quarters of the country's electricity (verify current). Whole districts depend on mining it.
Example
Coal districts in Jharkhand (such as Dhanbad, home of the Jharia coalfield), Chhattisgarh and Odisha would need retraining, new jobs and reuse of mine land as coal use falls.
Don't confuse with
- Just Energy Transition Partnerships (JETP): funding deals in which rich countries pay for coal phase-out in particular countries. They go to South Africa, Indonesia and Vietnam, not India. The just transition is the idea, and a JETP is one way of funding it.
