Line and bar graph

Geography glossary

Topic: Graphical Representation of Data and Thematic Maps · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 3 "Graphical Representation of Data"

Meaning

A line and bar graph puts two kinds of data on one diagram, over a shared axis of months. Rainfall is shown as bars, read against one Y-axis. Temperature is shown as a line, read against a second Y-axis on the other side. You can see at once how heat and rain change together through the year. It is the standard way to show the climate of a weather station.

Example

NCERT draws Delhi's climate this way. The temperature line rises from 14.4°C in January to 33.3°C in May–June. The rainfall bars peak at 19.3 cm in July, during the monsoon.

Don't confuse with

  • Climograph: a climograph does not put months on an axis. It plots one climate variable against another, such as temperature against humidity, and joins the 12 monthly points into a shape.
