Simple bar diagram
Topic: Graphical Representation of Data and Thematic Maps · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 3 "Graphical Representation of Data"
Meaning
A simple bar diagram has one bar for each item. All bars have equal width and equal spacing, and each bar's length matches its value. It gives a quick comparison of one variable across items. The bars are usually arranged in ascending or descending order. Time series, such as months or years, are kept in time order instead.
Example
NCERT shows the monthly rainfall of Thiruvananthapuram, on the Kerala coast, with one bar per month. The tallest bar is June, at 35.6 cm, as the south-west monsoon sets in. The months stay in calendar order.
Don't confuse with
- Multiple bar diagram: a simple bar diagram has one bar per item. A multiple bar diagram has several adjoining bars per item, one for each variable.
