Livestock Census
Topic: Geographical Data: Sources, Compilation and Processing · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Livestock Census is a nationwide headcount of livestock and poultry in India. It has been held since 1919-20, roughly once every five years. It shows how many animals of each kind there are and where they are found. This helps plan dairy, animal health and rural income schemes.
Example
The 20th Livestock Census (2019) counted about 536 million livestock in India. The 21st Livestock Census began in October 2024 (verify current).
Don't confuse with
- Agriculture Census: it counts operational landholdings (their number, size, tenure and use), not animals, and started in 1970-71.
