Meaning
The National Statistics Office (NSO) is India's main body for official statistics. It was formed in 2019 under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) by merging two older offices: the Central Statistics Office (CSO) and the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO). It runs large sample surveys and compiles national accounts, the official figures for the size and growth of the economy.
Example
The NSO runs the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), which began in 2017-18 and measures jobs and unemployment. It also runs the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES), held in 2022-23 and 2023-24.
Don't confuse with
- Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner: it conducts the Census of India under the Ministry of Home Affairs. It is not part of the NSO.
