Mahakali Treaty (1996)

Geography glossary

Topic: India and her Neighbours · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

The Mahakali Treaty is a 1996 agreement between India and Nepal. It covers the shared development of the Mahakali river, which is also called the Sarada or Kali. It deals with the Sarada barrage, the Tanakpur barrage and the planned Pancheshwar project. The Pancheshwar project has stalled for a long time, so the treaty has delivered less than it promised.

Example

The Pancheshwar project is planned on the Mahakali, where the river forms the border between Uttarakhand (India) and far-western Nepal. Little work has been done on it.

Don't confuse with

  • Kosi (1954) and Gandak (1959) agreements: these are earlier India-Nepal river deals on different rivers that flow into Bihar.
  • Ganga Waters Treaty (1996): this treaty was signed in the same year, but it is between India and Bangladesh. It covers sharing Ganga water at Farakka.
