Meaning

A mandi is a wholesale market for farm produce. Farmers bring grain, fruit or vegetables there and sell them in bulk to traders. Most rural marketing centres and many towns in India have a mandi. In India, most mandis are regulated under state APMC Acts, the laws that set the rules for farm-produce markets in each state. Since 2016, e-NAM, an online trading platform, has linked many mandis so that buyers in other places can bid for produce.

Example

Azadpur Mandi in north Delhi is a large wholesale market for fruit and vegetables. Produce arrives there from many states, and traders then sell it on to shopkeepers and street vendors across the city.

Don't confuse with

  • Periodic market (haat): a haat is held only on fixed days and mostly sells goods to consumers. A mandi is a permanent market where farm produce is sold in bulk to traders.
