Urban marketing centres
Topic: Tertiary, Quaternary and Quinary Activities · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 6 "Tertiary and Quaternary Activities"
Meaning
Urban marketing centres are trading centres in towns and cities. They sell both ordinary goods and specialised goods that small places do not stock. They also have markets for labour, housing and semi-finished goods (goods that are partly made and will be processed further). Professionals such as teachers, lawyers, consultants, doctors, dentists and vets work there. Because they offer so much, they draw buyers from a large surrounding area.
Example
Connaught Place in New Delhi has shops selling everyday goods next to offices of lawyers and consultants, clinics and showrooms for specialised goods. People come to it from all over the city and nearby towns.
Don't confuse with
- Rural marketing centres: these are quasi-urban, meaning only partly town-like. They mainly serve nearby villages through a mandi and a few shops, and they have poorly developed personal and professional services.
