Nagpur Plan
Topic: Transport and Communication in India · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 7 "Transport and Communication"
Meaning
The Nagpur Plan was India's first serious road development plan, drawn up in 1943. It sorted roads into four classes: national highways, state highways, district roads and village roads. The plan was never carried out because the princely states and British India did not work together on it. Still, the way it classified roads shaped how India plans roads today. A twenty-year road plan followed in 1961.
Example
The plan's top class, national highways, now carries long-distance traffic between states, for example NH-44 running north to south across India. This is the same tiered system the Nagpur Plan first set out in 1943.
Don't confuse with
- Twenty-year road plan (1961): India's next road plan after Independence. The Nagpur Plan came earlier, in 1943, before Independence.
